WhatsApp Video Calling: What it means for Android and iOS App Development?

Merely few weeks ago, WhatsApp gets video calling facility after rolling this new feature in its existing design. While the users of WhatsApp have multiplied in the past few years, thus enabling Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg to invest a hefty sum in billions to acquire it. WhatsApp has become an indispensable part of our lives. Its recent take on security that ensured that messages being received and sent were encrypted have cemented the faith of its users in the application. The success of WhatsApp has inspired many other chatting applications in the domain of Android and iOS App Development, but, not many of them deal in video calling. Skype being a prominent name in video calling had its services available as applications for both iOS and Android, but with the coming of the video call feature of WhatsApp, the tables have turned.

What impact is the video call feature in WhatsApp going to have on the domain of Android and iOS App Development. To begin with, it imparts a critical lesson for all enterprises. WhatsApp did not start out with the objective of inculcating video calling, who knows, if it had not been acquired by Facebook, it might not have. However, what enterprises dealing in various applications can learn is that your application must have a UX/UI Design that allows easy inculcation of additional features in the long run. As users get acquainted to video calling in their WhatsApp interface, I don’t expect any major changes to come to its interface. Changes in application design and interfaces can be repelling, and hence, when you start out with your application design, there must always be room for additions.

WhatsApp Gets Video Calling

It is necessary to look beyond the idea you started your application with. Many applications and services tend to constrain themselves without improving or catching up with trends. While this approach may help them get some permanent users, it doesn’t work in the long run as most users are looking for progressive changes in their application design. They key to a successful application is in improvising as per the market trends. If you witness a new trend, and if it is beneficial to the working of your application, there is no reason for you to not have it on your application.

WhatsApp’s acquisition by Facebook raised a lot of questions, especially in terms of its price. Was fetching an application for $18bn sensible? Turns out, Facebook’s own messenger hasn’t had much success compared to WhatsApp, and therefore, it made sense for Zuckerberg to invest in the latter. Today, WhatsApp is an indispensable commodity for Smartphones, and unless, they do something really repelling, they are going to rule the roost. The impact on Android and iOS App Development is going to be dramatic, but it would certainly be motivational for other enterprises looking to carve out a space for themselves.
